Slippers to Heels: Ballet Technique and Tango Stylization
May 31 and June 7 at 3:00pm

Come for a unique dance experience that embraces Classical Ballet & Argentine Tango/Tango Nuevo. Refine grace, strength and flexibility with a twist on ballet barre technique followed by structured footwork and strides in dance heels. All of this will be applied to center floor choreography. The aim is to perfect balance skills via changes of axis and to explore new enhancements and means for musical expressions for all dancers, whether solo or in a partnered embrace.

Ballet slippers and dance heels (character/ballroom/salsa) required. Mixed level adults and teens welcome. All genders encouraged to participate.

Teresa Anne Volgenau is a choreographer, dance instructor, performing artist (in classical/contemporary ballet and Argentine Tango), and film/stage actress. In 2010 and 2011, Teresa was teaching, performing, and choreographing in Warsaw while engaged in a dance partnership with Piotr Wozniak, one of Eastern Europe’s finest tangueros. She was a tango consultant to the season winners on the Polish edition of “You Can Dance,” and dance coach to Mika Urbanika (Polish popstar). While abroad, Teresa also designed and launched a series of Choreographic Intensives (a 20-30 hour program combining lectures and exploratory methods) for professional and pre-professional dancers.

Teresa returned to NYC at the start of April 2012 is now on the faculty for Adult Ballet at The Joffrey Ballet School. She recently performed in the stage production “Tango Fever” at Teatro LaTea, and frequently conducts the workshop of her uniquely designed Slippers to Heels: Ballet Technique & Tango Stylization program.

Now in the US, Teresa has formed the Volgenau Dance Ensemble and is collaborating with composers, Will Wheeler and Gabriele Ciampi, for new choreographic works–including “Lunar Mythology” performed at Aaron Copeland’s Lefrak Hall. She has taught master classes and choreographed a heavily dance laden production of “Fame” for the Rocky Mountain Theatre Company in Denver, Colorado. Teresa most recently set the stage movement for a new off-off Broadway play entitled “Blue Moon” at the Schapiro Theatre that premiered in Feb of this year.
