International Student Visa Program

The International Student Visa Program (ISVP) at Dance New Amsterdam offers artists from all over the world the opportunity to study with some of the finest educators in dance today. Trained to appreciate the unique aspects of each student, our faculty is dedicated to giving personal attention and individualized instruction. Since 1997, the ISVP has hosted over seven hundred students from every corner of the globe. Students are given the opportunity to pursue full-time dance training for periods ranging from three months to three years and receive a certificate of completion for their work. Alumni of the ISVP have gone on to become members of nationally and internationally renowned dance companies, successful choreographers and gifted teachers.

Comprehensive Dance Studies Program

With over 45 teachers, our diverse curriculum includes a range of over 140 technique classes each week in a variety of disciplines including: Simonson Technique, Contemporary Modern, Ballet, Hip Hop, Yoga, Pilates, and more. Our Modern Guest Artist Series offers students the chance to study with some of today’s most highly regarded modern dance masters. Recent Guest Artists have included: David Dorfman, Jen Nugent, Doug Elkins and Natalie Desch. Students are able to create their own schedule in this independent study program. Non-professional students are encouraged to participate in our Discover Dance program which is designed to introduce beginners to all the various aspects of dance.

Performance or Choreographic Guided Study Programs

Our six month guided study programs in contemporary modern dance performance or choreography, support and prepare the dance artist for a professional career. With a dedicated curriculum and ongoing individualized mentorships with faculty members, guided study students are encouraged to delve intensively into their craft and are given the opportunity to show their work each semester at Visa Voices, Performance Project and Choreolab.

Teacher Training Programs

Simonson Method of Teacher Training Course
Dance New Amsterdam is home to the Simonson Technique, an organic approach to movement and dance developed by master teacher Lynn Simonson. Based on principles of anatomy and kinesiology, and emphasizing injury prevention, this comprehensive methodology has received international recognition. The Teacher Training Course covers pedagogic principles which are applicable to all styles of dance. It includes topics such as analysis of movement, efficient communication of information and anatomical understanding. Students learn these skills through practical application.

STEELE Pilates Advanced Mat Certification
The only program of its kind, the Steele Pilates Advance Mat Certification allows international students to obtain their Pilates Method Alliance approved Pilates certification while on an M-1 student visa. The course covers basic through advanced mat exercises, teaching to special populations and the use of props.

Tom Todoroff Acting Conservatory

The Tom Todoroff Two-Year Conservatory is an in depth professional training program for a select group of actors over the course of two 32 week periods, beginning mid-September and ending in Mid-May. Actors train for an average of four hours per day, five days a week.  By design, this schedule allows for rehearsal outside of class and artistic research, including museum exhibits, Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. Located in the heart of Manhattan, the Tom Todoroff Conservatory is deeply committed to your growth as an actor and is dedicated to increasing the vitality and aliveness in your work and in your life.  The Conservatory will help nurture the Head, the Heart, and the Hips.  The training is comprehensive and challenging as the teaching staff is unparalleled.  With their guidance, you will learn to speak with muscularity and clarity, move gracefully and powerfully, communicate and compete, develop your craft, your humanity and so much more. Graduates of the Two-Year Conservatory will perform in a final Industry Showcase for agents, managers and casting directors in New York City. Apply and audition at here.

Performance Opportunities


For dancers interested in performing or showing original work, Dance New Amsterdam provides a host of performance oriented programs including our Works In Progress series, RAW Material showcase series for emerging artists, the New York Summer Dance Intensive, the Performance Project, and Choreolab. Our International Student Visa Program offers international students a performance arena of their own, the Visa Voices showcase, a full scale, professionally produced concert held twice a year in our on-site theater.

A Home for Dancers Away from Home

Dance New Amsterdam welcomes and celebrates our international student body with an array of support services including housing assistance, interpreters, health insurance options, a dedicated student advisor and more. Please see our other program information page. We provide mentors who nurture our new arrivals and help them define their course of study. Our international students provide a cultural flavor and diversity that is vital to the dynamic force that Dance New Amsterdam plays in the New York City arts community.
