LEVYdance

LEVYdance East Coast Tour 2009
Featuring three East Coast premieres, acclaimed modern dance company LEVYdance returns to New York with an eclectic, ambitious and stunning program. Originally staged for an outdoor venue, the program includes the repertory piece Nu Nu, as well as three new works: Physics, wake, and Cirrus. The program premiered in San Francisco in November 2008. The San Francisco Chronicle said each piece, “…offers a steady stream of intensity and muscular beauty.”
Artistic Director Benjamin Levy’s unique choreography draws on the athleticism and virtuosity of the company of five. These particular pieces draw on themes of inquisitiveness, intimacy, invitation, partnership, as well as explorations of physical laws such as gravity and inertia. But rather than work from a particular theme or from a pointed question, Levy hopes the audience will have a personal experience and explore their own particular ideas that the work provokes.
About LEVYdance: Founded in 2002 by Benjamin Levy, Artistic Director, the company is based in San Francisco where it manages its home studio. In its history, LEVYdance has given performances in New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Seattle, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Los Angeles, Kaunas, Lithuania and San Francsico. In August 2008, the company made its debut at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. In addition to regular performances, the company sustains a comprehensive education program, including master classes and residencies at univerisites, a summer intensive for college and pre-professional dancers, and a children’s program for ages 3 - 10.
