New York Summer Dance Intensive

NEW YORK SUMMER DANCE INTENSIVE
June 28-July 25,

Entering its twenty-second year, the New York Summer Dance Intensive is a four-week workshop that centers on modern and contemporary technique, with an emphasis on performance skills. The program provides daily technique classes with fellow participants; unlimited classes from the current DNA schedule; and culminates in a fully produced performance of original choreography by the Intensive’s faculty. NYSDI offers dancers the opportunity to study and perform at Dance New Amsterdam, one of New York City’s largest and most highly respected dance schools, known for its emphasis on injury-prevention in a supportive, yet challenging, environment. Each year, the Intensive’s Faculty is selected for their excellence as dancers and their integrity as teachers. Past choreographers have included Alexandra Beller (AD: Alexandra Beller/Dances), Ezra Caldwell (Former DNA faculty), Lindsey Dietz Marchant; Jeanine Durning (formerly of David Dorfman Dance), Ori Flomin (Assistant Choreographer of the Stephen Petronio Company), Jana Hicks, (DNA Faculty), Diane McCarthy (DNA faculty), Te Perez (DNA faculty), Oliver Steele (DNA faculty), Max Stone (DNA Faculty) and BJ Sullivan (Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro). Since its inception, the New York Summer Dance Intensive has grown in popularity and acclaim with participating students from all over the world. The 2009 Summer Intensive will have openings for 36 students at the Intermediate/ Advanced level. Workshop participants will be selected by audition to work with one choreographer on a piece of original choreography to be performed at the end of the Intensive. Each dancer will also be encouraged to create his or her own ideal program throughout the Intensive according to individual need, training and stamina.
NYSDI Faculty

Oliver Steele
OLIVER STEELE has taught internationally at the Ivanson Dance Centre (Germany), Matsuyama University (Japan), Dance Camp Compaine Champagne (Italy) and Ketsevhagoof Studio (Israel). He was on faculty at Steps on Broadway and Abizaid Arts from 1997-2002. He also has taught workshops and lec/dems at Rutgers University, the University of California at Santa Barbara, Tappan Zee Dance School and North Carolina School of the Arts. He currently is a member of the senior faculty at Dance New Amsterdam teaching Contemporary Modern Dance. Mr. Steele has performed with David Storey Dance Works, Scott Rink and Friends and as a soloist for The Kevin Wynn Collection. Mr. Steele has also worked with choreographers; Milton Myers, Adrew Asnes, Michael Foley, Ray Tadio, Charles Wright, Daniel Tinazzi, Richard Pierlon, John Evans and Nadia Tarr. In 1995, Mr. Steel co-founded STEELEDANCE with his wife, Teri Lee Steele. His choreography has been commissioned by North Carolina School of the Arts, Joyce Soho presents, In the Company of Men 2004, DNAs Gene Pool and the Tappen Zee Dance Group.

Julie Bour
JULIE BOUR is a native of France and started training Ballet and Contemporary dance at a very early age. After graduating from the National Dance Conservatory in Paris, Julie started working as a soloist with Angelin Preljocaj (Opera de Paris, New York City Ballet, Scala de Milan), she has been rewarded in NYC with a Bessie Award in 1997 for outstanding performance. She has performed works of Maguy Marin, Dominique Bagouet, Carolyn Carlson and Jennifer Muller. She danced with several companies in Europe, traveled to Israel to work with Inbal Pinto Dance Company, and relocated to North America a few years ago. Then she explored different cross-overs (e.g: through works like Julie Taymor’s Opera Grendel) and the theatrical aspect of dance. She started her own work and is currently assisting Mr. Preljocaj, re-staging Ballets around the world.

Adele Myers
In addition to being Artistic Director of Adele Myers and Dancers, ADELE MYERS is a Professor of Dance at Connecticut College. Myers’ choreography has been presented nationally including Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out; Bates Dance Festival; Tanglewood Music Center; Velocity Dance Center; New Haven International Festival of Arts and Ideas; Stonington Opera House; DanceNowNYC; Dance New Amsterdam and Joyce SoHo. As a performer, she was a member of Joy Kellman/Co. in NYC for six years and a guest artist with other companies including Momis. Myers was also a choreographic assistant on several projects for Jawole Zollar, Artistic Director of the Urban Bush Women (UBW). Commercial credits include choreographing a record release event for Aerosmith and industrials for TVGuide, among others. Myers earned a BA from Sarah Lawrence College and an MFA at Florida State University.

About Dance New Amsterdam
Dance New Amsterdam (DNA) is Lower Manhattan’s premiere center for performance and dance education. Internationally recognized as one of New York City’s largest and most highly respected dance organizations, DNA has a long and rich history as a home for contemporary dance. It was founded by five dancers and choreographers who were dedicated to teaching and developing dance artists in a nourishing, professional environment. DNA’s roster of Modern Guest Artists are culled from the ranks of New York’s current dance scene, and include Monica Bill Barnes, John Beasant III, Gerald Casel, Daniel Charon, Jeanine Durning, David Dorfman, Doug Elkins, Adriane Fang, Ori Flomin, Ashleigh Leite, Mariah Maloney, Juliette Mapp, Paul Matteson, Jennifer Nugent, Tere O’Connor, Stephen Petronio, Lisa Race, and BJ Sullivan.
Tuition
Tuition is $1260.00 and includes all classes, repertory and performance expenses. In order to hold a place in the program, applicants must send in a deposit of $100 upon acceptance. (This includes a non-refundable $25 processing fee.) Please make checks payable to Dance New Amsterdam. One half of the remaining tuition ($580) will be due on April 28th, 2010, and the remaining $580 will be due on May 28th, 2010. All tuition minus the processing fee will be refundable prior to June 6th, 2010, after which refunds will be possible only if a replacement can be found.

Please note: To apply for the New York Summer Dance Intensive, students must be 18 years of age by June 28th, 2010.

Applicants may audition by taking an audition class at Dance New Amsterdam. If it is not possible to audition in this manner, a videotape will be accepted. All who audition (video or class) will be asked to submit the application at that time. Audition Classes must be selected from the list of teachers below, and must occur in an Intermediate or Advanced level class. See the class schedule for class times. To audition, you must make an appointment for an audition class by calling Anne Merrick, Programs Coordinator at (212) 625-8369 ext. 206 or contacting her by email: amerrick@dnadance.org. Auditions will not be accepted without an appointment. All applicants will be notified by mail within three weeks of applying.

Video Application Guidelines
DVD or VHS submissions should be at least 5 minutes in length and should demonstrate the dancer’s use of proper alignment, technical ability and artistic expression. DVD is the preferred format for submissions.
If you must use VHS, please make sure that your tape is in U.S. standard NTSC format. Students from countries that use PAL or SECAM formats must convert tapes before sending.
Please test all materials before sending.
DVD or videotape must contain 3 sections:
1) Introduction: Close-up of dancer. Dancer should state his/her name and age.
2) Technique Section: Abbreviated ballet barre. Center work in modern technique.
3) Performance Section: May be a short solo work or a small group piece. If a group piece is submitted, recording must be of good quality and the applicant must be clearly identifiable.
