Social Responsibility

As we celebrate our 28th year as a cultural leader in Lower Manhattan, Dance New Amsterdam is taking stock of its steadfast progress and ongoing contributions towards being a socially responsible organization. Already, through our mission we are committed to being culturally invested in our local and global communities, supporting our business neighbors and subsidizing and sharing resources with artists, organizations, government programs and individuals. We are also committed to being an organization that supports responsibility to the planet and all its inhabitants thus strengthening our social fabric. As we move forward we will continue to be more efficient, economic and effective with our participation in the wildly varied aspects of life on our planet and will keep you updated on what we do and the possibilities of each persons involvement in the bettering of our world. DNA gives back through the following programs:

Internship Program
DNA has ongoing internship opportunities for all arts administration disciplines, giving academic credit, free dance classes and real-life work experience to post-graduate students.

Work Study Program
Designed to provide professional and non-professional dancers the opportunity to take classes at a subsidized rate, DNA relies on the support of work study students to fulfill many of its daily operations.

International Student Visa Program
This program offers students from all over the world the opportunity to train with today’s dance masters and be part of New York City’s vibrant dance community. Since 1997, the program has hosted hundreds of students from over 40 different countries to experience life, culture and dance in New York.

Production Apprenticeship
Apprentices fulfill crew responsibilities for productions in the DNA Theater in exchange for classes, production experience and a small stipend for dancers involved with the program. This hands-on experience is an invaluable opportunity for fledgling technicians.

Certification Programs
DNA provides dancers with the means to acquire certifications in-house in Choreography, Pilates and Simonson Technique. These certifications strengthen the assemblage of skilled arts educators in our community.

Subsidized Administrative Space
Recognizing the need for administrative space for burgeoning dance companies, DNA offers office space and support at a subsidized rate, extending its resources to New York City artists.

Green @ DNA
DNA is aspiring to be paperless; newsletters and press releases are distributed digitally (printed copies can be requested by calling 212-625-8369 ext. 226). All applications can be downloaded and most can be submitted electronically. We have capitalized on social networking sites for event information dispersal, eliminating costly direct mail for season performances, workshops and special events. In-house, DNA recycles plastic, paper, glass and cans daily. DNA’s sky-lit studios allow for less electricity consumption during daylight hours. Students check in for class with durable plastic swipe cards, a paperless transaction for our over 2,000 members. Also, every winter DNA serves as a donation center for New York Cares Coat Drive. These donations help thousands of men, women, and children who would otherwise go without.
