I support Dance New Amsterdam because it is an important cultural organization that has made a major impact on both the quality of life and the accessibility of dance in Lower Manhattan. I believe in the value that culture in general and dance in particular brings to our lives and our communities.
Facing eviction proceedings from its Lower Manhattan home, Dance New Amsterdam (DNA) is fighting to keep its doors open to continue a 26 year history shaping the contemporary global dancer and being a launching pad for today’s artistic voice.
Despite successful efforts to stabilize financially, DNA as a not-for-profit arts organization is unable to sustain a current commercial lease agreement of $68,945 in monthly rent which includes a monthly city tax of $33,050. Questions regarding public policy issues connected to the lease remain unaddressed. Tireless work over the past two years requesting re-negotiation of lease and non-profit tax abatement has yielded no consensus for resolution.
It is essential that every measure possible be undertaken by NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services and Fram Realty to ensure that Dance New Amsterdam can continue to serve the dance community for the next 25 years.
