New York Summer Dance Intensive 2008

June 29-July 27, Performances July 26 at 8pm & July 27 at 3pm

Entering its twentieth year, the New York Summer Dance Intensive is a four-week workshop that centers on modern and contemporary technique, with an emphasis on performance skills. The program provides daily technique classes with fellow participants, unlimited daily classes from the current DNA schedule, and culminates in a fully produced performance of original choreography by the Intensive's faculty.

NYSDI offers dancers the opportunity to study and perform at Dance New Amsterdam, one of New York City's largest and most highly respected dance schools, known for its emphasis on injury-prevention in a supportive, yet challenging, environment.

Each year, the Intensive's Faculty is selected for their excellence as dancers and their integrity as teachers. Past choreographers have included Alexandra Beller (AD: Alexandra Beller/Dances), Ezra Caldwell (Former DNA faculty), Jeanine Durning (formerly of David Dorfman Dance), Ori Flomin (Assistant Choreographer of the Stephen Petronio Company), Jana Hicks, (DNA Faculty), Diane McCarthy (DNA faculty), Te Perez (DNA faculty), Oliver Steele (DNA faculty), Max Stone (DNA Faculty) and BJ Sullivan (Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro).

Since its inception, the New York Summer Dance Intensive has grown in popularity and acclaim with participating students from all over the world. The 2008 Summer Intensive will have openings for 40 students at the Intermediate/ Advanced level. Workshop participants will be selected to work with one choreographer on a piece of original choreography to be performed at the end of the Intensive. Each dancer will also be encouraged to create his or her own ideal program throughout the Intensive according to individual need, training and stamina.

NYSDI Faculty

Lindsey Dietz-Marchant

Lindsey and her partner Jason Dietz-Marchant are freelance dance artists based in NYC, creating and performing work together over 11 years throughout the US and internationally in Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Russia, and South Africa. Recent awards and commissions include; commission from Dance New Amsterdam for half of the room, to premiere in NYC May 8-11; commission from Danspace Project in 2007 for Inflatable Man, Evaporating Woman (excerpt presented again by Dance Theater Workshop 16 February 2008, Family Matters); Artists in Residence, University of Michigan; guest residency, University of New South Wales Sydney, Australia; generous space grants Melbourne, Australia by DanceHouse, Lucy Guerin Inc. Studios, and Victoria College of the Arts. Additional upcoming NYC performance includes JoeÕs Pub March 14-15 in the Dancemopolitan series presented by dancenow/NYC. They have taught and set repertory internationally at Universities and Art Conservatories such as Julliard School of Performing Arts (NYC), SUNY (Purchase, NY), Bennington College (VT), La Guardia High School for the Performing Arts (NYC), The Art Institute of Indonesia, Chunky Move (Melbourne, Australia) and Modern Guest Artist Series at Dance New Amsterdam. In addition, Lindsey and Jason have danced for artists such as Monica Bill Barnes, Aszure Barton, Janis Brenner, Curt Haworth, Dean Moss, Neta Pulvermacher, Tami Stronach, and Kate Weare, among many others. www.dietzmarchant.com.

Ori Flomin

Ori Flomin is from Israel and has been dancing in New York City since 1989. His Choreography has been seen in NYC at DTW's Fresh Tracks and Split Stream, PS122 New Stuff, Movement Research at Judson Church, Joešs pub, DNA and internationaly in Austria, Japan and Israel. He was a member of the Stephen Petronio Dance Company (1991-1999) performing and touring internationally as well as staging Mr. Petronio's work on other companies. He recently rejoined the company as Rehearsal director and assistant to Mr. Petronio. He also danced in the works of Neil Greenberg, Mollisa Fenely, Kevin Wynn, and Michael Clark among others. He teaches dance as a guest artist at several companies and schools in Europe such as ImpulsTanz(Vienna), PARTS(Brussels) DansesHus (Copenhagen) and Sasha Waltz company(Berlin), as well as regularly at Dance New Amsterdam and Movement Research in NYC.

Oliver and Teri Steele

Teri graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a BA in Exercise Physiology. Oliver, Romanian by birth and a citizen of Germany, trained at the Iwanson Dance Center in Munich and moved to New York in 1992. The Steele's have both worked with Andrew Asnes, John Evans, Extended Dance Company, Michael Foley, Milton Myers, Val Suarez, Ray Tadio, Nadia Tarr and Kevin Wynn. In 1995 they co-founded their own company, STEELEDANCE. Their choreography has been presented at Joyce Soho, DTW's Bessie Schonberg Theater, the Cunningham Studio, The Yard, the DeMille Theater at NCSA, the Tribeca Performing Arts Center and the Evolving Arts Theater. They have taught at Steps on Broadway, Abizaid Arts, Tappan Zee Dance School, Rutgers University, Hunter College, the University of California at Santa Barbara, North Carolina School of the Arts, the Iwanson Dance Centre (Germany), Matsuyama University (Japan), Dance Camp Companie Champagne (Italy) and Ketsevhagoof Studio (Israel). Oliver is currently on faculty at DNA teaching Contemporary Modern. Teri teaches Pilates Mat, private Apparatus sessions and is the creator of the DNA Pilates Mat Certification Program as well as their Continuing Education Curriculum.

About Dance New Amsterdam

Dance New Amsterdam (DNA) is Lower Manhattan's premiere center for performance and dance education. Internationally recognized as one of New York City's largest and most highly respected dance organizations, DNA has a long and rich history as a home for contemporary dance. It was founded by five dancers and choreographers who were dedicated to teaching and developing dance artists in a nourishing, professional environment. Tuition

Tuition is $1200.00 and includes all classes, repertory and performance expenses. In order to hold a place in the program, applicants must send in the full tuition as soon as possible. (This includes a non-refundable $25 processing fee.) Please make checks payable to Dance New Amsterdam. All tuition minus the processing fee will be refundable prior to June 6th, 2008, after which refunds will be possible only if a replacement can be found.

How to Apply

Please note: To apply for the New York Summer Dance Intensive, students must be 18 years of age by June 29th, 2008.

Download the application form (pdf) here. Applicants may audition by taking an audition class at Dance New Amsterdam. If it is not possible to audition in this manner, a videotape will be accepted. All who audition (video or class) will be asked to submit the application at that time.

Audition Classes must be selected from the list of teachers below, and must occur in an Intermediate or Advanced level class. See the class schedule for class times. To audition, you must make an appointment for an audition class by calling Kathleen Kelley (kkelley@dnadance.org), Programs Coordinator at (212) 625-8369 ext. 206 or contacting her by email. Auditions will not be accepted without an appointment. All applicants will be notified by mail within three weeks of applying.

Video Application Guidelines

DVD or VHS submissions should be at least 5 minutes in length and should demonstrate the dancer's use of proper alignment, technical ability and artistic expression.

DVD is the preferred format for submissions. If you must use VHS, please make sure that your tape is in U.S. standard NTSC format. Students from countries that use PAL or SECAM formats must convert tapes before sending.

Please test all materials before sending.

DVD or videotape must contain 3 sections:

  1. Introduction: Close-up of dancer. Dancer should state his/her name and age.
  2. Technique Section: Abbreviated ballet barre. Center work in modern technique.
  3. Performance Section: May be a short solo work or a small group piece. If a group piece is submitted, recording must be of good quality and the applicant must be clearly identifiable.
