Master Class Series

Dance New Amsterdam is thrilled to announce our new Fusion Master Class Series! With this new series we are able to offer master classes of diverse styles. These classes will be offered between the hours of 2:00pm and 6:00pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The classes are aimed to offer dancers the opportunity to work with new teachers and discover new styles in a warm and nurturing environment. The new Fusion Master Class Series will explore a broad range of styles including Modern-Jazz, Jazz/Chinese Fusion, Afro-Cuban, Jazz, Contemporary Jazz, African and more.

Jennifer Archibald

founder and artistic director of the Arch Dance company, graduated from the Alvin Ailey School and has performed across the U.S. at major venues; John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Aaron Davis Hall, Lincoln Theatre, and The Duke on 42nd Street Theatre, Abron arts Centre, Judson Memorial Church, MTV, as well as in Europe, Russia and Canada. She has choreographed for both the NBA New York Knicks City Dancers and The Alvin Ailey School. Her works have been featured twice at the Elan Awards honoring Rob Marshall who choreographed the film Chicago and the contemporary dance historian Lar Lubovitch and 2007 Solstice Dance Festival. Graduate of Maggie Flannigan acting conservatory specializing in the Meisner technique. She has worked with chart listed singers and actors, Shaggy, Audrey Tautou from the Davinci Code as a movement specialist and a choreographer! She has taught contemporary master classes at Princeton University, University of South Florida, Kean University, International Association of Blacks in Dance, Virginia Commonwealth University, Jacksonville Community College, FAMU, Washington's Joy of Motion, Harmonique (France), Vortex in Russia. She recently completed a solo project performing Joan of Ark for choreographer Michael Foley in Paris France. In the summer of 2007 her work was featured outdoors in the heart of Time Square for Solstice Dance Festival.

Class Description

Int/adv Contemporary Jazz

Exploring movement styles ranging from an array of aesthetics, Archibald will use her modern/contemporary background and incorporate classical technique, street, funk and lyrical into a high energy level class. This class focuses on developing strength and personal style which will ask the dancer to connect athleticism, musicality, and articulation of the body. The Horton based warm-up is designed to enhance stretch, strength and alignment. Movement across the floor and combinations will train the dancer to move with conviction. Ms. Archibald emphasizes precision and clarity in execution and enforces clean technique.

Erin Holmes

Erin Bryce Holmes graduated cum laude from Temple University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance and a minor in psychology. She has performed with Tania Isaac, as an apprentice with Urban Bush Women, as a member of Kariamu & Company: Traditions, and internationally as a dancer in the African American Dance Ensemble. She is currently a dancer with Dance Theatre X and in the Fela Kuti Project, working with Bill T. Jones. Erin is a dancer and choreographer who approaches movement through pan- African, modern and hip- hop techniques. She is a teaching artist working throughout New York and Pennsylvania .

Class Description

Int/adv Afro-modern

In Afro- modern, much of the movement is based in the African dance diaspora creating a fusion of traditional African, pan- African and contemporary dance technique. This class begins with a center floor warm- up based in Umfundalai technique and finishes with choreography/combination. Emphasis is placed on staying grounded, breathing and finding your own individual groove! Traditionally, women should bring a lappa if you have it (about 2 yards of fabric to wrap around your waist).

Noibis Licea

Noibis Licea is native of Bayamo Cuba and a graduate of the National School of Arts in Havana where he received a degree in Modern Dance and is trained in Afro-Cuban Dance, Classical Ballet, Jazz, Acrobatics and Latin Rhythms.Mr Licea danced with various Companies in Cuba and taught at the Vocation School of Arts as well.In 1998 Mr Licea performed and choreographed in Mexico. Later in Miami his work included Salome with Florida Grand Opera .In Canada he worked with Royal City School of Ballet. In NY Mr Licea performs with Nai Ni Chen Dance Company.

Open Level Afro-Cuban

This Class is intended to create a movement environment that explores the various forms of Afro-Cuban Dance tradition while using modern dance techniques for strengthening and warm up.The class allow participants to embrace an accessible path to understanding dance through the quality of movements and cultural context. Note: On occasion long full skirt could be worn as this is a tradition of Afro-Cuban dances.

Darcy Naganuma

Darcy Naganuma is the Artistic Director/ Founder of Naganuma Dance, a Manhattan-based contemporary dance company. Born and raised in Lihue, Hawaii, Darcy holds a B.F.A. and Dance Education certification from the University of Utah. Her choreography, ranging in theme from human diversity to gender dynamics in Japanese culture, has been presented in Hawaii, Salt Lake City, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and New York. She has appeared in commercials and dance specials on both the MTV and VH1 networks, and was invited to perform at the UN Headquarters in May 2007. Critics describe her work as "physical and explosive", "powerful," "riveting," "lush and vibrant," and "utterly absorbing." Naganuma Dance was recently awarded an exclusive contract with Global Talent Associates, joining such esteemed companies as Rennie Harris Puremovement and Step Afrika. TFusing elements of release technique, ballet, street dance, martial arts, and Japanese dance, Naganuma's students enjoy full-bodied movement that is at once aggressive, sensuous, virtuostic, and spirited. Approaching movement from a skeletal level, students are challenged to move with less tension and greater efficiency-without losing the dynamic bite that has become her trademark. Naganuma encourages a warm, friendly classroom community, where students feel comfortable taking risks and pushing themselves to their own outer limits. Her classroom is a place where solid technique and artistic invention exist in active interplay.

Andrew Palermo

Andrew Palermo and Taye Diggs are the Artistic Directors of dre.dance, a New York City based contemporary dance company. Since its 2004 inception, dre.dance has garnered praise from New York critics as being'powerful', 'athletic', 'gifted', passionate', 'propulsive', 'unexpected', 'wonderful', 'weird', 'abstract', and a bunch of other cool adjectives. The company is currently in residence at TriBeCa P.A.C. and Joyce SoHo in New York City. For more info, go to www.dredance.com. Outside of dre.dance, Andrew has choreographed productions at Carnegie Hall, New Amsterdam Theatre, Hudson Theater, 37 Arts, Douglas Fairbanks Theater, The Old Globe, Prince Music Theater, Repertory Theater of St. Louis, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Music Theatre of Wichita, Wichita State University, and Sacramento Music Circus as well as on-camera choreography for Comedy Central's Stella, the film Holey Habits, and commercials for G-Shock and The Showtime Network/Apple Computers. Andrew has provided instruction in contemporary modern, jazz, hip hop, musical theater, lyrical and acting audition techniques atthe University of Cincinnati-CCM, University of Michigan, Pepperdine University, SUNY Potsdam, Wichita State University, Rochester School of the Arts, Broadway Dance Center, EDGE P.A.C., Millennium Dance Complex, and numerous national conventions, studios and performing arts camps across the country.

Int/Advanced Contemporary

Andrew Palermo's contemporary class is a hybrid of classical, modern, jazz, hip hop and theatrical techniques. Warm up, center and across the floor combinations are designed to build strength and flexibility while incorporating powerful accent, sustain and release elements inherent in Andrew's choreography. Center combinations vary; from the dre.dance repertoire, to contemporary jazz and lyrical pieces, to Andrew's theatrical choreography. Through the work, students are encouraged to find and utilize the balance of their power and ease, along with toeing the line of 'real life' movement and emotion with theatrical convention.

Allen Wildes

Allen was born and raised in Alma, Georgia. He received his BA in Chinese Minority Dance from the Yunnan Art Institute in Kunming, China, where he was also a member of the Yunnan Provincial Song and Dance Troupe. He developed the jazz dance education curriculum for Chongqing University and choreographed and performed for many Chinese recording artists. In Shanghai, Allen co-founded the performing group, Dissidence, under the artistic direction of Josslyn Cantius. Allen has taught and performed extensively throughout Asia and North America and feels truly blessed to share his passion for movement with his students.

Open Level Jazz/Chinese Fusion

Jazz/Chinese Fusion blends the grace and fluidity of Chinese Traditional Folk Dance with the pop and energy of jazz. Students are asked to build on the fundamentals of western jazz dance and challenge their bodies and minds with a new style and dance culture
